Beta 1.01

Target Tone

Practice landing the right chord tone when the band changes chords.

Start here

  1. Open the tool. Pick a key and a progression, or leave the defaults.
  2. Look at the prompt: it asks for a root, 3rd, 5th, or 7th.
  3. Tap that note on the neck. Circle is the root, square is the 3rd, diamond is the 5th.
  4. Hit Play. The band runs the changes. On beat 1, land a chord tone.
  5. Use Space to play or pause. Arrows change chords.

Phone shows open strings plus a 5-fret window. First tap unlocks sound.

What you are training

Not “play a scale.” Hear the chord, see the shape, hit the tone the ear wants — especially on beat 1.

The dots

In depth

Key and scale

Tonic is the home pitch. Scale chooses the pitch set the shapes live in. Roman numerals in the progression follow that key. Accidentals can stay on Auto unless a chart is written with flats or sharps.

Progressions

Use the list for common changes, or type your own: I vi IV V, ii7 V7 Imaj7, or note names like Am F C G. Spaces, commas, or bars all work.

Shapes

CAGED locks a five-fret area named by the open chord shape. 3NPS is three notes per string. Pentatonic uses the five boxes. Window is a raw five-fret slice you set with Window start. Prison mode randomizes that window so you cannot hide in one box. Seams shows two neighboring CAGED areas at once. Whole neck is desktop only.

Look-ahead and common tones

Look-ahead paints the next chord’s 3rd and 7th early so you can walk in. Common tones glow when a pitch stays through the change. Beat-1 resolve scores whether you landed a chord tone when the new chord hits.

Drills

The band

Groove picks the drum feel. BPM is tempo. Beats / chord is how long each change lasts. Mute drums, bass, or pads if you only want click. Count-in gives four clicks before the form. Preview chord plays the current harmony without starting the loop.

Labels and flip

Labels can show function (R / 3 / 5 / 7), scale degree, or note names. Flip labels swaps function and degree while the band runs — useful so you do not memorize one spelling.

Presets

Save a room: key, shape, groove, drill. They live in this browser only. No account yet.

What this beta is not

No microphone scoring. No cloud save. No teacher accounts. If a shape or chord token looks wrong, write Murphy what you typed and which key you were in.
